How to recover programs from a broken tivo?

I have a Tivo with a failed motherboard. I replaced it, so I can watch my shows that I had recorded before it broke. It powers on fine, but when I get to the now playing list, it says "hardware failure detected" and to restart the tivo. From what I understand, the Tivo will work fine if I erase the hard drive. But, that defeats the purpose of trying to save the programs. What should I do?
