A song that sounds great if sung without background music?

My friends kept telling me that the songs i chose for a singing competition do not sound great without some background music. So i need a good english song for the contest which will sound great even if i sing it without background music. Please suggest me a good song as I am really desperate. Probably an Enrique/Bruno Mars song?
