Should I pause the Tivo while talking to my husband?

My wife doesn't seem to listen to me when the TV is on. When I talk she either claims she can't follow either conversation (me or the TV) if both are speaking, asks me to pause the TV, or does so herself. Whenever she wants to talk during a TV show she pauses it rather than simply talking over it. It drives me nuts that I'm not important enough to her that she can simply focus on what I am saying and tune out the TV!
